The power of education
Show notes
About this episode: In this episode, we explore the role of education and its empowering potential in enabling young people to tackle issues, especially environmental and climate problems, autonomously. While it's often said there are no simple solutions to complex problems, providing education is a true magic solution. Heather and William went to the same school and now both run inspiring environmental projects. Through Heather and William’s stories, we see that access to good quality education can make all the difference. The episode also emphasizes that the human right to education is still denied to millions.
Guests: Heather Mirembe and William Nsabiyunva grew up in the same SOS Children's Village in Kampala, Uganda, and consider themselves “brother and sister.” They both attended the SOS Hermann Gmeiner International College (HGIC) in Tema, Ghana, where they were first introduced to the concepts of climate and environmental justice. Today, Heather studies medicine in Ghana, while William studies mechanical engineering in South Africa. In Uganda, Heather runs a small-scale piggery project that aims to sustainably utilize food waste that would otherwise end up in the trash. William, on the other hand, has built a sailboat from upcycled plastic bottles and recycles old paper to create sustainable paper bags, helping to eliminate environmentally harmful plastic bags. Both have been actively involved in various committees and clubs.
